Applications Open for New Zealand China Council 2026 internship

The New Zealand China Council is now inviting applications for its 2026 internship opportunity.

The Council is a New Zealand-led, New Zealand-funded organisation which acts as a cross-sector, peak body for the New Zealand-China relationship. The Council works to promote a resilient and balanced relationship between New Zealand and China through research, dialogue, events and public engagement.

This paid, seven-week part-time internship offers a unique opportunity for a university student interested in New Zealand–China relations to gain practical experience across research, stakeholder engagement, communications and event delivery. Working alongside the Council’s executive team in Auckland, the successful intern will contribute to a range of projects while developing valuable professional skills and networks.

A key focus this year will be drafting an introductory guide for Māori pakihi (small businesses) on doing business with China. The project will involve researching stakeholder needs, planning and writing the guide, and testing it with stakeholders.

Other responsibilities will include project-related research, event planning and delivery, social media management , and providing broader support to the Council team as required.

Skills requirement

  • Interest and knowledge about the New Zealand-China relationship
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and tasks
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines
  • Confidence and experience engaging with Te Ao Māori would be an advantage

The internship is based in Auckland and is paid at the Living Wage for 25–30 hours per week.  Accommodation, travel to and from Auckland, daily commuting costs, and laptop provision are not covered.

We are seeking applicants who are:

  • New Zealand citizens or permanent residents;
  • In good health;
  • Due to have completed at least two years of tertiary study by November 2026 in business, trade, political studies, law, languages, or a related discipline

The Council’s preferred internship period is November-December 2026 (seven weeks). (A later start date in November, with the remaining weeks completed during January and February 2027 can be discussed.)

If you or someone you know is looking for a hands-on opportunity to deepen your understanding of New Zealand’s relationship with China while contributing to meaningful projects, we’d love to hear from you.

Applications close at 11:59 pm on Sunday, 16 August 2026.
