In reviewing the friendly relationship between New Zealand and China

we see not only the depth of cooperation but also the warmth of history. As is well known, among Western countries, Sweden was the first to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, making a historically significant decision as early as 1950, demonstrating an independent and forward-looking diplomatic vision.
While New Zealand was not among the earliest countries to establish diplomatic ties with China, it has consistently been a “front-runner” in bilateral relations. This is often summarized by the “three firsts”:
First, New Zealand was the first developed country to sign a free trade agreement with China. In 2008, the China–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement was concluded, opening a new chapter of high-level economic and trade cooperation.
Second, during China’s accession process to the World Trade Organization, New Zealand was among the earliest developed countries to offer support, reflecting an open, inclusive, and pragmatic spirit of cooperation.
Third, New Zealand was also the first developed country to initiate and complete negotiations on upgrading its free trade agreement with China, injecting sustained momentum into the bilateral relationship.
These “firsts” are not only chronological milestones, but also reflect a firm commitment to mutual respect and win-win cooperation.
Looking ahead, we believe that through joint efforts, China–New Zealand relations will continue to move forward steadily, contributing positive energy to regional cooperation and global development in an increasingly complex international environment.
