The Peaceful Reunification of China Association of New Zealand

Commemorating Taiwan’s Restoration to China and Advancing the Cause of Peaceful Reunification

Statement Marking the 81st Anniversary of Taiwan’s Restoration to China

On 25 October 2026, we mark the 81st anniversary of Taiwan’s restoration to China. On this solemn and historically significant occasion, the Peaceful Reunification of China Association of New Zealand joins Chinese communities in New Zealand and around the world in commemorating this important chapter in Chinese history. We reaffirm our commitment to preserving historical memory, upholding national unity and promoting the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, while strengthening the bonds of community, cultural heritage and mutual understanding in New Zealand.

Remembering History and Honouring Our Shared Heritage

On 25 October 1945, the formal ceremony for the acceptance of Japan’s surrender in Taiwan was held in Taipei. Taiwan and the Penghu Islands were subsequently restored to Chinese administration. This event formed an important part of the historical legacy of the Chinese people’s victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the broader Allied victory in the Second World War. It remains closely associated with the Chinese nation’s historical struggle against foreign aggression and its determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Remembering this history is not simply an act of commemoration. It is an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of previous generations, preserve the historical experiences that have shaped the Chinese nation, and ensure that younger generations understand the significance of these events. Historical awareness provides an important foundation for cultural continuity, a sense of belonging and a deeper appreciation of the experiences that connect Chinese communities across generations and geographical boundaries.

In 2025, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress designated 25 October as Taiwan Restoration Memorial Day, further recognising the significance of this historical anniversary. For Chinese communities in New Zealand, commemorating the occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on shared heritage, strengthen historical understanding and pass on cultural traditions to future generations.

Strengthening the Chinese Community in New Zealand

As members of New Zealand’s diverse and multicultural society, Chinese New Zealanders maintain meaningful connections with their cultural heritage while contributing to the country’s social, economic and cultural development. Across generations, members of the Chinese community have helped build local businesses, support community organisations, enrich cultural life and foster connections between New Zealand and the wider world.

The preservation of Chinese history, language and cultural traditions is an important part of this community’s ongoing contribution. It enables younger generations to develop a deeper understanding of their heritage while encouraging respectful engagement with people from different backgrounds. A confident appreciation of cultural identity and a commitment to mutual respect can strengthen social cohesion and enrich New Zealand’s multicultural fabric.

The Peaceful Reunification of China Association of New Zealand recognises the importance of bringing together Chinese community organisations, community leaders, families and younger generations through constructive dialogue, cultural activities and the commemoration of significant historical occasions. We will continue to encourage community participation, promote understanding across generations and foster a strong sense of shared responsibility for the well-being of the Chinese community in New Zealand.

We also recognise that lasting community relationships are built on respect, trust and open communication. By promoting cultural understanding and constructive engagement, we seek to strengthen connections within the Chinese community and contribute positively to the wider New Zealand society of which we are a part.

Advancing Peaceful Reunification Through Dialogue and Engagement

The Association remains committed to its founding mission of promoting the peaceful reunification of China. We uphold the One-China principle, oppose separatist efforts advocating Taiwan independence, and support exchanges and engagement across the Taiwan Strait as constructive means of fostering understanding and the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.

We believe that meaningful communication, cultural exchanges and people-to-people connections can help maintain relationships across the Taiwan Strait and create opportunities for greater mutual understanding. We encourage members of the Chinese community in New Zealand to contribute, in appropriate ways, to dialogue and exchanges that promote peace, stability and the long-term well-being of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

As an association rooted in New Zealand, we will continue to work with community groups and individuals to preserve historical awareness, strengthen community ties and promote peaceful engagement. In doing so, we seek to make a constructive contribution both to the Chinese community in New Zealand and to the broader aspiration for peaceful reunification and the long-term development of cross-strait relations.

Looking to the Future With Shared Purpose

History deserves to be remembered, cultural heritage deserves to be preserved, and the bonds between communities deserve to be nurtured. The 81st anniversary of Taiwan’s restoration offers an opportunity to reflect not only on the lessons of the past, but also on our responsibilities to future generations.

We call upon members of the Chinese community throughout New Zealand to remember this important historical anniversary, cherish their cultural heritage, strengthen solidarity within the community and continue contributing to New Zealand’s inclusive and multicultural society. We also encourage continued efforts to foster understanding, maintain peaceful exchanges across the Taiwan Strait and work towards the long-term well-being of the Chinese nation.

Guided by a shared respect for history and a commitment to peace, dialogue and community engagement, the Peaceful Reunification of China Association of New Zealand will continue to bring people together, preserve our collective heritage and contribute to the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and the cause of China’s peaceful reunification.
