{"id":9074,"date":"2026-08-03T09:51:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T21:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nzchinesedailynews.co.nz\/?p=9074"},"modified":"2026-08-03T09:51:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T21:51:21","slug":"local-shellfish-bans-for-gulf-extended","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nzchinesedailynews.co.nz\/?p=9074","title":{"rendered":"Local shellfish bans for Gulf extended"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A ban on harvesting some types of shellfish in parts of Hauraki Gulf has been extended for another two years, Oceans and Fisheries Minister Shane Jones says.<\/p>\n<p>The extension to two-year closures at Umupuia Beach, Te M\u0101t\u0101 and Waipatukahu, and Waiheke Island were requested by Ng\u0101i Tai Ki Tamaki, Ng\u0101ti Tamater\u0101 Treaty Settlement Trust, and Ng\u0101ti P\u0101oa Iwi Trust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtending these temporary closures is a practical step to help replenish local shellfish for the benefit of current and future generations,\u201d Mr Jones says.<\/p>\n<p>The applicants are all members of the Pou R\u0101hui Research Project, which incorporates m\u0101tauranga M\u0101ori alongside modern scientific tools to restore identified marine taonga species within the areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe group\u2019s work involves training wh\u0101nau in traditional skills and data collection to strengthen m\u0101tauranga, to support evidence-based decision-making, and to ensure the long-term sustainability of customary fisheries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI commend Ng\u0101i Tai Ki Tamaki, Ng\u0101ti Tamater\u0101 Treaty Settlement Trust, and Ng\u0101ti P\u0101oa Iwi Trust and the Pou Rahui Project for their strong kaitiakitanga in caring for these important local fisheries and the broader Hauraki Gulf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary of the closures:<\/p>\n<p>Umupuia Beach is closed to the take of cockles. The closure covers waters from Te Puea at the western end of the beach to Whakakaiwhara Point at the eastern end of the beach.<br \/>\nTe M\u0101t\u0101 and Waipatukahu is closed to the take of cockles, mussels, oysters, and pipi. The closure covers waters from \u014ctaki Creek to Diehard Stream (also known as Onepoto Steam), and offshore one nautical mile.<br \/>\nWaiheke Island is closed to the take of mussels, p\u0101ua, and packhorse rock lobster. The closure includes waters within one nautical mile of Waiheke Island but excludes Te Matuku Marine Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The closures come into effect on 7 August 2026.
