Ownership of 11 temporary homes at \u014cm\u0101hu Marae in Hawke\u2019s Bay has been transferred from the Government to \u014cm\u0101hu 2R M\u0101ori Reservation and Ng\u0101ti Hinemanu, Ng\u0101i Te Upokoiri me \u014dna Piringa Hap\u016b Authority Trust in a move to support M\u0101ori-led housing, Associate Minister of Housing Tama Potaka announced today. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Government is committed to supporting M\u0101ori-led housing, community resilience, and its Treaty obligations, and through these changes, the homes will transition into affordable housing for wh\u0101nau, preserving cultural continuity and community ties,\u201d Mr Potaka says. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis divestment also avoids future government liabilities and ensures the homes will remain in use for social good.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u014cm\u0101hu Marae is the largest marae in Heretaunga (Hastings) and one of seven marae devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023. <\/p>\n
Following the cyclone, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment\u2019s Temporary Accommodation Service partnered with the people of Te Piringa Hap\u016b, \u014cm\u0101hu Marae and Ng\u0101ti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated to deliver 11 homes at Utaina \u014cm\u0101hu village to support displaced wh\u0101nau. <\/p>\n
As the recovery has progressed significantly, the divestment of the village will ensure that the homes continue to serve the community through papak\u0101inga housing. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt is through these types of housing decisions that we can empower communities. By enabling local ownership and stewardship, we\u2019re supporting regional economic growth and ensuring that these houses continue to deliver public value.\u201d <\/p>\n
The homes were transferred to the \u014cm\u0101hu Marae Trustees for a nominal amount, reflecting the cultural significance of the site, the Trustees\u2019 financial position, and the Crown\u2019s Treaty obligations. <\/p>\n
