While New Zealand was not among the earliest countries to establish diplomatic ties with China, it has consistently been a \u201cfront-runner\u201d in bilateral relations. This is often summarized by the \u201cthree firsts\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, New Zealand was the first developed country to sign a free trade agreement with China. In 2008, the China\u2013New Zealand Free Trade Agreement was concluded, opening a new chapter of high-level economic and trade cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, during China\u2019s accession process to the World Trade Organization, New Zealand was among the earliest developed countries to offer support, reflecting an open, inclusive, and pragmatic spirit of cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, New Zealand was also the first developed country to initiate and complete negotiations on upgrading its free trade agreement with China, injecting sustained momentum into the bilateral relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
