Wills Month highlights how Kiwis can leave a charitable legacy for the next generation, Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Louise Upston says.<\/p>\n
\u201cBetween now and 2050, New Zealand is expected to experience the largest intergenerational transfer of wealth in its history. Inheritances are estimated to total $1.6 trillion. <\/p>\n
\u201cAs wealth passes between generations over the coming decades, there is an opportunity to create a legacy to benefit communities for years to come,\u201d Louise Upston says.<\/p>\n
It comes as new research commissioned by Community Foundations of Aotearoa NZ found givers view their generosity as deeply tied to their values, sense of community and gratitude.<\/p>\n
It also found that among those who receive professional financial advice, fewer than one in five have ever had charitable giving raised with them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis suggests that Kiwis are interested in the idea of bequests, but that there is an opportunity for the professional advice sector and charitable sector to work together to bridge that gap, and better enable New Zealanders to leave a deeply meaningful legacy through their will.<\/p>\n
\u201cI encourage all Kiwis considering leaving a bequest in their will to raise it with their professional advisor, or speak to their local Community Law or Citizen\u2019s Advice Bureau. <\/p>\n
\u201cWills Month is a chance to start conversations about the difference a charitable bequest can make and the impact we choose to leave behind,\u201d Louise Upston says.<\/p>\n
New Zealanders have a strong tradition of giving. In 2024\/2025, charities received $5.16 billion through donations, koha and fundraising.<\/p>\n
