A new child and youth mental health and addiction service that will make it easier for young people and their families to access the right support has been officially launched in Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes, Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey says.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis service has been designed to provide a single point of connection, helping children, young people and families navigate the mental health and addiction system and connect with the support that best meets their needs,\u201d Mr Doocey says.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen someone reaches out for help, they shouldn’t have to navigate multiple services or tell their story over and over again. This service takes a ‘no wrong door’ approach, ensuring people have a clear place to go.<\/p>\n
\u201cRather than duplicating existing services, the new service, Hono ki te Ora, will work alongside health, education, social and community providers to improve coordination and help young people get to the right support sooner.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have heard from too many young people that, in a time of need, the system can feel too fragmented and they don’t know where to go for help. We know that not knowing where to go or who to talk to has been reported as the reason for unmet mental health needs for around one in three children.\u201d<\/p>\n
The service supports children and young people aged 5 to 24 years across Central Otago and the Queenstown Lakes district, with self-referrals as well as referrals from schools, GPs and community organisations.<\/p>\n
Mr Doocey says Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes was prioritised because it is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing regions, with a growing number of young families.<\/p>\n
\u201cCentral Lakes is also one of New Zealand’s most geographically isolated communities. More than 70 per cent of New Zealanders who live over two hours from a major base hospital live in this region, making strong local services and better coordination of support especially important.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe service operates from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Since beginning to receive referrals in May, the team has fully recruited its workforce, strengthened relationships across the community and established the foundations needed to support our young people.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring its first three months of operation, 80 referrals have already been received, with every young person receiving support from the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cThirty-five children and young people are currently being actively supported, while others have been successfully connected with the services best placed to meet their needs, including specialist services.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe early response demonstrates the value of having a dedicated point of connection for children, young people and their families and is already helping ensure people are connected to the right support at the right time.<\/p>\n
\u201cI look forward to seeing the real results that will be delivered in the region as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n
