Statement of Strong Condemnation by The Peaceful Reunification of China Association of New Zealand Regarding Lai Ching-te’s “Taiwan Independence” Separatist Remarks
On 14 March 2026, Lai Ching-te, at the so-called “30 Years of Taiwan’s Presidential Direct Elections and Democratic Resilience Symposium,” openly made separatist remarks advocating “Taiwan independence,” including the claim that “Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country.” He promoted the notion that “democracy equals sovereignty,” deliberately exaggerated the so-called “mainland threat,” and attempted to incite confrontation. Such statements and actions seriously undermine China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity and threaten peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The Peaceful Reunification of China Association of New Zealand expresses its strong condemnation of these remarks.
Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. This is a historical fact and an international consensus that cannot be distorted or denied by anyone. Using “democracy” as a pretext for separatism is a distortion of democratic principles and will only bring serious risks to the people of Taiwan and to regional peace.
The Peaceful Reunification of China Association of New Zealand firmly opposes any form of “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and resolutely safeguards national sovereignty and territorial integrity. We believe that the complete reunification of the motherland is an inevitable historical trend that cannot be stopped.
We call on people of insight from all sectors of New Zealand society to recognize the nature and harm of “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, jointly oppose any rhetoric or actions that seek to divide the country, uphold the One-China principle, and contribute positively to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, promoting friendly exchanges between China and other countries, and advancing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
The Peaceful Reunification of China Association of New Zealand
